Sennheiser BTA1 TV Adapter Review
The Sennheiser BTA1 is my favorite Auracast transmitter for TV listening. Its excellent sound quality and Speech Clarity mode have made television dialogue noticeably easier for me to understand with my hearing aids.
There is currently one important compatibility issue from my testing that hearing aid users should know about, which I explain below.
Speech Clarity Is the Star
The BTA1 doesn't just broadcast the TV's audio—it can enhance it.
For me, Speech Clarity mode is the standout feature. Dialogue is much easier to understand than with standard TV audio. I've even found myself using closed captions less often.
The BTA1 also offers Virtual Surround Sound mode for people who want a more immersive listening experience. The third mode is Virtual Surround Sound plus Speech Clarity combined. Yes, it’s really Dolby Audio quality sound enhancement and you will love the sound quality.
Easy Setup and Control
The BTA1 provides several ways to connect to a TV, including:
HDMI
Optical audio
3.5 mm analog audio
Sennheiser's Smart Control Plus app makes it easy to configure the transmitter from a phone, including changing the broadcast name, sound mode, settings, and updating firmware. It’s a very polished app that does a great job. I had to forget the old Bluetooth pairing and pair a second and third box separately. It would be nice if they could support multiple boxes with one phone. I may have been doing something wrong.
Great With My Hearing Aids
I've used the BTA1 extensively with my Philips HearLink 9050 hearing aids at 48 kHz, and the experience has been excellent. We like to watch British TV shows and movies. I found that I could understand more words without relying on closed captioning. We keep it on for the other viewers in the room now.
I even tested a BTA1 connected to a church sound system. Hearing the microphone audio directly through my hearing aids without all the surrounding room noise demonstrated just how useful Auracast can be beyond television.
Important Hearing Aid Compatibility Note
As of October 2026, I recommend checking your hearing aids' Auracast audio compatibility before purchasing the BTA1.
My Philips hearing aids work extremely well with the BTA1 at 48 kHz. However, when I installed another BTA1 for a friend whose ReSound hearing aids required a different audio configuration, we couldn't get them to connect successfully.
I then did additional testing. In my tests, the BTA1's 16 kHz and 24 kHz modes did not work successfully with several Auracast devices I tried, including hearing aids, earbuds, and headphones.
I also encountered inconsistent behavior when switching the BTA1 between the 48, 16, and 24 kHz settings.
I've reported these findings to Sennheiser and they indicated a fix will be included in the next firmware update.
If your hearing aids support the BTA1's 48 kHz broadcast, my experience has been excellent. If they require 16 or 24 kHz, I would verify compatibility before purchasing.
I'll update this review if the situation changes.
One Other Setting Worth Changing
I discovered another setting that initially caused confusion.
When I paused the TV and audio stopped for more than 15 seconds, the BTA1 began auto searching its other inputs for audio, causing the Auracast broadcast to disconnect from my hearing aids.
Sennheiser support helped me identify the solution: Turn off “Auto-source input” switching toggle using the app.
After making that change, the issue was resolved.
My Take
When used with compatible Auracast earbuds, headphones, or hearing aids, I think the Sennheiser BTA1 is an outstanding TV transmitter.
The sound quality is excellent, setup is easy, and Speech Clarity makes it particularly valuable for people like me who have difficulty understanding television dialogue.
The current 16/24 kHz compatibility issue prevents me from recommending it universally to every hearing aid user right now. But with my 48 kHz-compatible hearing aids, I absolutely love it.
I'm hopeful a future firmware update will broaden compatibility, because the BTA1 has the potential to be an exceptional Auracast TV solution for even more people.
